In Crusoe on Cricket, Alan Ross presents the best work of a masterly writer who, with Neville Cardus, helped to raise cricket reporting from journalism into an art. R.C. Robertson-Glasgow, who was never known as anything but Crusoe, wrote about cricket with a natural grace, elegance and wit that no one has exceeded. The collection opens with the section of his autobiography that concerns his playing days for Oxford and Somerset. Then comes The Brighter Side of Cricket, in which Crusoe captures the spirit of the game he loved, with its jokey comedy, its rich nostalgias and fantasies.
